Hello There!
Welcome to Birds of Passage.
If you love to travel, to skip the guidebooks and go where the locals go, and see corners of cities in a new light, then this place's for you.
During my travels, I have met with many locals and travelers (whom I affectionately call "birds of passage" - hence the name of this site) and they have the most incredible stories and recommendations. As much as the usual travel websites, minus some exceptions, give you the tourist attractions and things to see, I was looking for a platform that not only shared lesser known (and more often budget) places and had recommendations from true locals; but also a site that truly celebrates the art of travel and every aspect that comes with it. Things like how it's like to solo travel, to have a travel romance or friendship, how the mundane in a foreign place becomes exotic, and everything else in between.
So I decided to give all of that a platform to share with the world.
You'll discover travel in a different light:
PLACES & SPACES
Places to stay, eat & drink, and explore. These places are either places you know but with a different take or those that aren't in your regular guide books. All recommendations come from locals and birds of passage who have explored the spots.
AN ODE TO...
...life en route. What we talk about when we talk about travel. Read about thoughts and musings of the little and big moments on trips and the things we've learnt while away from home.
TRAVELER PROFILES
We ask a set of questions about travel to the incredible people we cross paths with on our journeys. Read on to learn more about their lives and the different ways you could explore the world. The many travelers we've encountered include an ex-military man who explored Germany from Southeast to North on foot, an art director who works on a cruise ship that goes all around the world, and twenty-somethings in transition, ready to make their marks. It's another testament of though we all come from different backgrounds and places, we all have something in common and shared experiences. The world is small, after all.
TRAVEL MONEY DIARIES
We all know that travel no longer is necessarily expensive, but we never got what "$50 a day" budget that all travel websites say gets us. Inspired by Refinery29's Money Diaries, we break down what you could spend on - food, drinks, experiences, and more - based on the different travel styles. Along the way, learn how to maximize your dollar and get inspired to add things to do to your itinerary.
ART X TRAVEL
Celebrating the good, the bad, and the beauty of travel while drawing parallels and contrasts with art. This explores the film, music, literature, poetry, paintings, sculptures, and various forms of art you know and love in a different way, and maybe introduce new favorites too.
...and more.
Also, if you love to travel, have a story to tell, or a cool place (or two) you think people should check out... send us a message! We'd love to feature your writing.
